The John Lewis Voting Rights Act and For the People Act should remain a priority. The Build Back Better Act should remain a priority. That said, there is so much that needs to be done. In addition to that, the leadership being shown in the effort to stand with Ukraine and avert another world war is an important reminder of what we didn’t have in the last four years with Trump. I also commend commitment to his promise of breaking the ceiling for Black women on the Supreme Court. My opponent Rand Paul opposed these critical measures, but they have resulted in billions of dollars of vital and lifesaving investments in Kentucky. I do applaud the immediate leadership on passing the historic American Rescue Plan and Infrastructure Law. What letter grade would you give Joe Biden’s performance in office? Why? We have to push past the cynicism and stand together. We have to seize this and apply more pressure, growing our coalitions as citizen lobbyists, relational organizers, and run for office ourselves. Ensuring a living wage is now a standard talking point. Conversations about canceling student debt are now the norm. But this is when we have to push harder than ever: The movement is growing and the tide is turning, but it is clear that our future and our pursuit of democracy and justice are hanging by a thread. ![]() Why should young people remain engaged in 2022?Īs young leaders, we are fighting for our future. They then pushed lawmakers to stay accountable to their campaign promises, many of which didn’t come to pass. In 2020, young voters turned out in huge numbers for Democrats. Our government must also address our country’s deepest ills of structural racism and poverty by finally ensuring reparations for descendants of enslaved Americans, and a Universal Basic Income. That includes fully implementing climate and conservation corps in Kentucky, leveraging federal investment to reclaim abandoned mines, and making historic investments to update our water systems and protect our waterways. To take this on, we must start by making the vital investments in our infrastructure to clean our land and foster a clean energy economy. We are not simply facing a crisis our challenges have risen to a state of climate chaos, most recently evidenced by the massive tornado that ripped across Kentucky right before Christmas. In many ways, my commonwealth has been a ground zero for the ills and decline of the fossil fuel industry, and it is critical that we listen to the people on the ground to build the transition to the future our children deserve. If you’re elected to office, what specific actions would you take on the climate crisis?įighting for a sustainable future is a central tenet in my vision for a Kentucky New Deal. This would transform our economy and dramatically help us break the cycle of poverty. Student debt should be completely canceled and college should be free. My wife and I are still paying back student loans, and I have all but concluded we will never pay them off. So many people are blocked from advancing their careers and ending generational poverty in their families because of crushing student debt. The student debt crisis is criminal at this point. What is your plan for addressing the student debt crisis? Kentucky Senate candidate Charles Booker talks to us about the “criminal” student debt crisis, pushing past cynicism, and building a progressive future for his state. In our new series Teen Vogue ’s Top 10, we’re asking candidates 10 questions about the issues we know our readers care about the most, including student debt and climate change - plus a few bonus ones for fun.
